According to a similar one found online, it appears to have been used in coal mines. A clock marked "Simplex Time Recording Co. Gardner, Mass. USA" can be seen. Above the clock is a drum with numbers from 1 to 31 that appear to correspond to the days of the month. Printing is achieved by the piston at the top of the mechanism that presses the paper onto the ink ribbon.
