Η μαγνητοταινία ήρθε σα διαδοχη των δίσκων βινυλίου. Περαν της καλύτερης μηχανικής αντοχής (δε σπανε σα τους δίσκους) είχαν και την ικανότητα εγγραφής. Η μαγνητοταινία είναι στην ουσία μια λεπτή ταινία με μεταλλικά ρινίσματα τα οποία διευθετούνται απο την κεφαλή εγγραφής. Η μαγνητοταινία εφευρέθηκε στη Γερμανία 1928. Εμεινε στην αγορά μέχρι τις αρχές του 2000. Αξίζει να σημειωθεί οτι τεχνικά με παρόμοιο τρόπο δούλευαν και οι δισκέτες. Recorder with headphone and microphone ports.
