Remington, the company that built the first commercial typewriter, never stopped improving and evolving its machines. Since the beginning of the 20th century, it has been producing small portable typewriters. In these, the movement of the printing elements towards the paper is achieved by a toothed connection between the levers and the printing bars. In 1924 Remington acquires the Noiseless Typewriter Company, which has invented a silent mechanism for its typewriters. The typographic elements just touch the paper without hitting it and therefore without the slightest noise. Remington adopts the mechanism in its portable noiseless machines. However, it seems that 'noiseless typewriters reduce the speed of the typist, as he is not sure whether the letters are printed'. So the "noisy noiseless" or noisy noiseless ones are circulating as an intermediate solution. This particular portable machine, the Remington 9, falls into that category: it is a "noisy noiseless". It is exactly identical to the "noisy noiseless" Remington 8. The only external difference is the letters on the paper roll.
